While many questions are still open about actual gas reserves, their integration in transport networks and the availability of required equipment for their exploitation, significant discoveries in Cyprus’ waters in 2011, are a new and potentially important element in the energy landscape of the eastern Mediterranean and, consequently, for Europe. It also causes, in turn, a genuine regional « great game » involving, among others, Turkey (because of its occupation of northern Cyprus), Israel and Lebanon (whose offshore gas deposits are next to Cyprus’).
What is to be expected from the exploitation of these deposits: firstly for Cyprus, but also for the whole region and for the European Union which imperatively needs to diversify its supplies? What technical challenges are to be met to exploit these deep deposits as cheaply as possible? And how to reconcile the conflicting interests of all stakeholders?
